Dry Cleaning

Business suits are not as common today as they were two generations ago, when virtually all males office staff wore them. But these suits, along with the female equivalent, need to be dry cleaned. The fabrics used in this business and formal wear is easily damaged by water. So alternate cleaning methods need to be used.

Dry cleaning is something a a misnomer. Liquids are used, just not water or any liquid that damaged the fabric. The most common liquid used for dry cleaning is Perchloroethylene, called ‘Perc’ for short.

The chemicals used for dry cleaning are rather harsh for human health. In the short term they cause respiratory issues and neurological problems. In the long term they may be carcinogenic. So this type of cleaning is never done at home. Instead, the clothes that require dry cleaning should be taken to the Professional Dry cleaners.

The clothes to be dry cleaned go through three stages.

  • Washing with the solvent liquid , rather like normal washing machine cleaning. The fabric is soaked in the cleaning fluid, and then as the solvent is removed almost all of the stains are removed with it.
  • Spot cleaning – This uses solvent and steam to remove any trouble spots on the garment not fixed by the first procedure. Often the garment is re-cleaned after this.
  • Pressing – The clothes are ironed to look like new. This is the most labor intensive part of the process.
