Cleaning Timber Floors

Office Cleaning Sydney CBD

Hard floors have some notable advantages. They are easy to sweep or vacuum clean, the don’t hide dust, pollen and allergens like carpet can, and they are quite durable. If the hard floors are timber then they last for decades, and can be re-sanded to look like new.

Regular cleaning also helps maintain the condition of the floor, as it removes the grit that might cause scratching.

Finished and Unfinished Timber floors

Most timber floors have some protective coating, some varnish or clear polyurethane over the surface. a few timber floors are left raw, or have a stain to change the colour. The finish or lack thereof will make a big difference to the timber and how it needs to be cleaned.

We can test a floor to see if it has been finished. If a small amount of water beads then the floor has a finish. It the water soaks into the timber, the floor is unfinished. An unfinished floor needs to be cleaned differently.

Unfinished Timber Floors

Always begin be sweeping timber floor or vacuuming with a soft brush attachment. this removes grit and dust. Do this once per week.

Use a damp mop or microfibre mop to clean the unfinished floor. Keep the water to a minimum so it evaporates before it has a chance to soak into the wood and cause damage. Do this damp mopping once per month.

Finished Timber Floors

Sweep or vacuum the floors with a soft attachment once per week. Also do this before any mopping or wet cleaning.

Finished floors will not absorb water unless it is excessive. So they can be mopped for a deeper clean. Add a little vinegar to the water and mop in the direction of the woodgrain. Keep the mop damp rather than saturated.

Let the timber floor air our after cleaning.
